Private William Martin
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, other than that he was born around 1893 and shortly after the war lived with his wife at 41 Windmill Street, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland.
William Martin enlisted or was attested into the army on 11 December 1915. He joined the North Irish Horse (having either been called-up or transferred from another regiment) in early September 1917 (regimental number probably 2690 – later Corps of Hussars No.71970).
It is not clear if he served overseas with the regiment. While no Medal Index Card has been located, the Silver War Badge rolls state that he did serve overseas.
Martin was discharged on 20 February 1919, being 'surplus to military requirements, having suffered impairment since entry into the service' (paragraph 392(xvi)(a), King's Regulations). He was granted a pension due to synovitis of the left knee, which was attributed to his military service.
